How to Create a Better Bedtime Ritual
Good sleep starts before you get into bed.
The way you spend the last hour of your day can create a transition between doing and resting. Instead of waiting until you’re exhausted and hoping sleep happens, create a few simple cues that tell your body and mind it’s time to switch off.
Here are seven ways to create a bedtime ritual you actually look forward to.
1. Set the mood
Start with your environment. Lower the lights, tidy away the day and make your bedroom feel calm and inviting.
Keep lighting warm and soft in the evening rather than filling the room with bright overhead light. Your bedroom doesn’t need to look perfect. It just needs to feel like somewhere you can exhale.
Mist Dream Ritual Aura Mist over your pillow and around the room. Over time, that familiar scent can become part of the signal that the day is done.
2. Put your phone to bed
We’re all guilty of the one last scroll that somehow turns into another 45 minutes.
Try giving your phone its own bedtime. Put it on charge outside the bedroom, or at least somewhere you can’t reach it from bed, and switch off notifications.
Less scrolling means less stimulation at exactly the time you’re trying to wind down. It also reduces exposure to bright light in the evening, which can interfere with the natural signals that help regulate your sleep and wake cycle.
3. Switch to red or warm light
As bedtime approaches, swap bright white lighting for dim, warm toned light.
Red light has become popular as part of evening wellness routines. While research into red light therapy specifically for sleep is still developing, we do know that bright, blue rich light at night can interfere with the body’s natural circadian rhythm.
So think less about red light as a sleep treatment and more about creating an environment that feels softer, darker and ready for rest.
4. Create a scent ritual
Scent can be a beautiful way to mark the transition from day to night.
Apply Calming Aromatherapy Roller to your pulse points, close your eyes and take a few slow breaths. The ritual itself is simple, but that’s the point. Something you can easily repeat every night.
Pair it with Dream Ritual Aura Mist, or use our Sleep Support Kit to bring the two rituals together.
5. Take five minutes to meditate
You don’t need an hour long practice. Five or ten quiet minutes can be enough to create some space between the day you’ve had and the night ahead.
Sit somewhere comfortable, close your eyes and bring your attention to your breathing. When your mind wanders, come back to your breath.
We love Chakra Balance Mist for meditation. With clary sage and grounding botanicals, it makes a beautiful companion to an evening practice. Apply to your pulse points, breathe in the aroma and use the scent as a cue to turn your attention inward.
6. Get everything out of your head
If your brain suddenly remembers everything you need to do the moment your head hits the pillow, keep a notebook beside your bed.
Write down tomorrow’s tasks, anything that’s been playing on your mind, or a few thoughts from your day.
It doesn’t need to be profound. The idea is simply to get it out of your head and onto the page.
7. Keep it simple
Your bedtime ritual doesn’t need seven steps every night.
It might simply be dim the lights, put your phone away, mist your pillow, apply your roller and take five slow breaths.
The magic is in making it yours and coming back to it each night.
Small rituals. Big shifts.
